“I’m interested in building experiences that invoke a sense of play and discovery. Are these games? Maybe? I don’t think this is game creation in the typical sense though – you can’t win or lose or die in these worlds.”

Grant set out to create an experience that invited a sense of discovery and “wow moments”, noting that at times CONNECTOME can feel like a meditative space, supported by an ambient, evolving soundscape.

Creating “Moments of Wow

Connectome explores how changes in scale can create moments of calm and wonder. The “Triangle Sanctuary” (image at right) is one such space.

“Building in virtual and mixed reality on platforms like Meta Quest offers a canvas of artistic expression much larger than any gallery or physical space can provide.”

Playing with Color

Color plays a critical role in the world of CONNECTOME. Each door that opens reveals the color of the room to which it connects.

“I set out to create an interactive environment that felt artful. Color choice, layout, and composition are all intentional.”

Aspects of Gameplay

CONNECTOME is a game in that you do have to “complete” a room before being able to move on to other rooms, but there are no objects to collect, no points to earn, no lives to lose.

“Some rooms take a little more thought than others… objects that are not immediately obvious until you’ve connected a few lines – the reward is the satisfaction of completing the object. Other rooms are straightforward and less challenging, but offer a different type of reward.”
